Business Question! Bank Loans: UK Web Media! Help!?!?

with one comment

Jamie Harwood was still in his twenties when he set up his business, UK Web Media. Within five years the turnover for the business was around £10m.

Jamie’s first idea for a website was www.marriagegiftslist.com "My uncle was getting married and the invitation listed three or four wedding gift list. I thought it would be nice to have something online, consolidated in just one place."

But starting an on-line business required money. When Harwood asked his family for financial backing, they refused, so he took out a £7000 bank loan. His website, which still exists, flourished, although it did not make him rich – but the experience led him to found UK Web Media in 2002. This business helps larger firms to advertise effectively on the internet.

Harwood says "The key is to have confidence in what you do and know what you do. My biggest tip is to find something you really, really enjoy. If you enjoy it the fruits of your labour will follow."

1. Why do you think that Jamie’s family refused to lend him money, but the bank consented?
2. Why do you think he asked for a bank loan rather than extending his overdraft?
3. What do you think are the key factors that will determine the success of Jamie’s business?

So I don't want to go uni, could I do an internship or something?

with 7 comments

I live in England if this helps
so i’m proceeding into my second year of college and i may have to take a third, but i don’t wish to go university.
i would like to have a career path in web designing and coding so is it possible if i could take an internship or a course (when i’ve finished college)?
the courses i took during first year of college is:
GCSE Maths
BTEC National Award in ICT
A level in cultural studies (extended project i.e volunteering) and
A level in Communications and Culture (another sector regarding English)

and my choices for 2nd year are BTEC National Certificate in ICT (2nd), BTEC National Award in Business or A level in business, may have to re-take my gcse maths because i failed in the modular course (module 5 i think, which is the hardest of all buggers!) and another A level of some sort…

so im basically stuck, i do not wish to go university, and i got told, why are you still in college if you dont want to go university? my answer was simple, its better than having gcse’s. But yeah any ideas?
and the reason i dont wish to go university is because i want to travel the world and explore cultures!

any suggestions? thanks :)
Wow within 1 minute I get 3 helpless answers! Thanks, appreciated.
Cheers gus for that answer but I don’t think military would suit me, I mean yeah had a dream of being in military forces when I was young but now it’s like you get sent to another country and a high possibility of getting killed and plus you don’t get paid that much… My aim in life is just too earn money, help out my family and travel the world… I’m not big headed or anything sorry if I gave that insight!

And dragonfly thanks for that answer! Really helped, I’ve Been looking online for internships and could hardly find anything within my area… Kinda sucks lol but will ask my teacher! Thanks

Will yell.com advertising be worthwhile?

with 2 comments

Hi

I am a self employed web designer based in South Essex and I have a little money to invest in promoting my business.

I have spoken to the people at yell.com and they will offer me a ‘middleweight’ advert for my yellow pages book area for around £590 for he year – this ad has photos, logo, bullets point, weblink etc.

In all honesty I probably need to get say 2 normal/average jobs from this to get my money back.

Do we think this is the best use of £600 for advertising? I have tried Google ad before but it seems to be company’s offering their services to me (in India etc) and people looking for work who consequently get in contact, from this route.

Have other people used Yell.com for similar businesses and found it fruitful? or are there any other avenues that you might suggest. I am not looking for free advertising ideas, I’m pretty sure I have exhausted all these.

Any help/advice would be great.

Thanks

Ashley
I take it that’s your own website Ellie, I genuinely wanted some advice please.

How to Successfully Promote a Non-Business Blog?

with 2 comments

I am thinking about starting up a blog with a proper domain name (e.g. www.myblog.com rather than www.myblog.wordpress.com) and its own web server.

I’m also stuck with Niche ideas? I don’t want to sell anything and bear in mind I work full-time, this blog is merely a hobby to pass my spare time :) I’ve looked on Google but everything can be so vague like ‘write about your hobbies’. I don’t really want to write a blog about writing a blog ;) ideas are welcomed!

All the ‘how to promote your blog’ guides I have come across have all been related to web stores or businesses, or something that makes money. Does anyone know how you’d promote?

I have less than 100 friends on Facebook/Twitter (as they are all family/good friends, not ‘networking’ people) and have discovered from experience that asking them to share links and retweet links never works; if I am lucky I’ll have one person do it, but that’s it.

Any other suggestions? I know about meta tagging and adding to search engines, but how do I really drive traffic in?

Thanks :)

Online Business Ideas for Low Budget?

with 3 comments

I want to do an Online Business. My budget is a meagre 0. I am ready to work around 3 hours a day. I have internet connection at home.
I have tried the following stuff and want to keep away from it:
1.) Affiliate Marketing
2.) Online Surveys and
3.) Paid to Read Email
4.) Domain Flipping
I want an idea in which i will be the owner of the business and i want to earn a decent monthly income at least after 6-8 months of starting the Business. I want to have a website for this.
I have a very little knowledge in web designing. I can create a static site with a Website Builder Software.
Though not immediate, I need to start earning at least after 6-8 months after starting the business.
Please give me good ideas along with the money i have to spend for different things for the start up.
Please indicate the Fixed and Recurring Costs.

Thanks in Advance

Life, is it in the mountain?

Hey everyboby, I hope anyone out there can give me some advice for a life changing. I am 34 yrs old and I have been skateboarding for a least 20 yrs, I am Italian but I had spent many yrs in Brazil and now I spent the last 8 years in England. I been bored for the last 2 years thinking where could I go, far from all this boring busy cities with people running about to nowhere, talking about big brother and all that celeb crap thing. In Jan this year I went to a ski resource in France and I tried some snowboard, it was my first time and I felt like that was the place to be. Well… I had checked a lot of different web site from the winter jobs agencies to snowboard courses and still some questions.
Because I don’t want stay just for a season that makes things a be more hard…well pay for a snowboard instructor course is out of my possibilities. The way would be get a job there for a shit money some thing around 200 pounds a month working 6 day out 7, which I dont mind if I can stay around the year, I dont want to do it just for a season, my idea is to stay there for good , working, snowboarding far from this messy place.
Here is my question… does anyone know how to get anywhere in the Alps and stay around the year working and having fun?, If you have got a business there and need a assistant for this winter I can help for any kind of job.
Thanks all

Best of Paris in 1.5 days?

with 2 comments

I have a business meeting in Paris on 26th March and have booked to arrive lunchtime on 24th. I have been before for work but never got to see anything, this time I want to make amends.

I would like ideas on any/all of the following: –

The 3 must do activities (do not have to be mainstream)

The best places for lunch Saturday evening and lunch and dinner on Sunday (I am happy to pay up to 50 Euros if it is good for dinner – less for lunch though. Recommendations, ideally with a web address and/or phone to book a table (if it is needed).

Recommendations for a good Hotel. I am working close to the Madeleine metro stop. However, I will stay elsewhere in the city if accessable to there if the value for money is good.
Again contact details helpful here including any web page.

Any recommended city walking tours, particularly for Saturday evening. Is there one that tours some bars?

Any good bar recommendations.

Any rugby on?

Any other ideas you have.

Many thanks
