Would the bank lend to me if I started a franchise?

without comments

My work recently announced redundancies. I hope I won’t be affected but if I am I may use the opportunity to open my own business franchise, either dog grooming or pet care. the problem is I wouldn’t have enough cash to buy into one. Would the bank lend to me?

I have an excellent credit rating according to experian but I do have some debt and a student overdraft. However, I was very surprised when I was refused a credit card a few months back (they said they thought I had enough debt), I only wanted it because it was interest free so I was going to move my balance from my original one to help pay it off (have subsequently paid it off) . My debts do not amount to more than 43000 (including student overdraft and a loan for when I got my eyes lasered). I always make the payments on time.

So my question is, do you think my bank would give me a loan to start up a franchise or do you think they ll think I have too much personal debt already? I work full time at present but would probably only do if I was made redundant, I calculated I would only be entitled to around £750 redundancy money if I were.
The problem is I dont have cash, I would only do this if I were made redundant in the next few months and I defo wont have cleared all my debts by then.
I have bought a flat but its mortgaged and ive barely paid any of it off yet as only bought it a year ago.

How do i go about starting up my own magazine?

with 2 comments

My name is Mark. I am a creative practice BA Honours degree graduate of Newcastle college. Specialising in Graphic, Editorial and Web Design.

Since completing my degree this May I have had some time out and have tried a couple of full time jobs in fields other than that my degree is in. In this time I have had some thinking time, and have decided to give an idea I had throughout my Degree a real shot.

I have always wanted to one day run my own magazine. My intentions originally were to work for an existing magazine for some added experience and contacts, but have found since leaving University that there is no work outside London.

I do not however want this setback to stop me from achieving my eventual goal. Therefor I intend to take on board every ounce of advice that is available to me.

I have never done anything like this, and although i have the editing skills, The business and startup side of things I have no idea about. Some of my questions may sound ridiculous for me not to know, but please don’t judge me. I really am lost and need help with a direction for my idea.

1. Where do I start?
2. How many people is realistic to start up the magazine?
3. How is it funded from the start?
4. How do free magazines fund the staff wages and printing etc?
5. How do you sell advertising space in your magazine?
6. What is the going rate of advertising space in magazines?
7. Who would print and bind the magazine?
8. How do you fund mass batches?
9. Once you have a full magazine, its printed, its bound and its in boxes in your living room…… how do you get it on the shelves in the supermarkets, news agents and WH Smiths.
10. How do you advertise your magazine?

Any answers to these queries would be greatly appreciated. And/or anyone interested in joining me in my dream please get in touch.

How to Successfully Promote a Non-Business Blog?

with 2 comments

I am thinking about starting up a blog with a proper domain name (e.g. www.myblog.com rather than www.myblog.wordpress.com) and its own web server.

I’m also stuck with Niche ideas? I don’t want to sell anything and bear in mind I work full-time, this blog is merely a hobby to pass my spare time :) I’ve looked on Google but everything can be so vague like ‘write about your hobbies’. I don’t really want to write a blog about writing a blog ;) ideas are welcomed!

All the ‘how to promote your blog’ guides I have come across have all been related to web stores or businesses, or something that makes money. Does anyone know how you’d promote?

I have less than 100 friends on Facebook/Twitter (as they are all family/good friends, not ‘networking’ people) and have discovered from experience that asking them to share links and retweet links never works; if I am lucky I’ll have one person do it, but that’s it.

Any other suggestions? I know about meta tagging and adding to search engines, but how do I really drive traffic in?

Thanks :)

(UK) Legality of collecting donations and advertising revenue from a website.?

with one comment

(This is a question for people in the UK familiar with Tax and Law)

I am planning to open a website which will generate revenue from :
> Advertising.
> Registration.
> Services.
> Donations.

I’m working full time and pay tax and NI properly, earning over £25,000 a year gross. This website would be a personal money maker and I want to know what tax I will need to pay on the earnings from the website given that the web hosting package itself has a fixed running cost per year of around £400 to £600. I do not have a "business" but would be willing to set one up providinng there were no additional costs and there were clear benefits in doing so.

I’m not familiar with anything like this and want to get a good idea of what is and isn’t legal before I start. The more detail, the more points.

Thanks in advance.

Want to start own business, need advice?

with one comment

Both myself and my husband are graphic designers and although we both work full time, we are quite poorly paid and thought about starting up on our own. The only problem being is that neither of us are sales people and don't feel confident that we could get the work in, although I'm fully confident in our abilities as talented designers. Anyone got any suggestions? We have thought aboout asking a third person to join the partnership but wouldn't know where to start looking for someone trustworthy and as commited as we are.
