For people who have started their own business

Were there any business advice websites which were invaluable when setting up your business?

I would just like to know if you have any favourite business advice websites and what it is you particularly like about them.

Many thanks, Rebecca

Which are some suitable jobs if I have these Business Studies and Finance qualifications?

with one comment

I am 18 years old and have just completed my BTEC National Certificate in Business Level 3 and an IFS Diploma in Financial Studies now looking for a job.

For some reason i just dont think i will be able to get a job in a bank because banks must want very high standards and people with experience plus the recession is making everything worse…

btw if you could give answers related to England.

Can anyone recommend a very good web design service for a small business?

with 9 comments

I bought a ‘Mr Site’ package but I’ve ultimately found that it doesn’t suit my needs, doesn’t display properly in Internet Explorer, and is difficult to use. I would rather pay someone to do it for me – but as a brand new business I can’t afford to pay much.
Does anyone out there have any ideas or suggestions?
Thank you very much.
Lia
Thank you everyone for your excellent suggestions- all appreciated very much and all very helpful indeed.

Advice on starting a business?

with one comment

I’m thinking of starting a small business making jewellery as I made some pieces for myself and keep getting stopped in the street by people wanting to know where I got it! I’ve been investigating places that could provide some support but I keep being told that I’m inelegible either because I live in the wrong area or because I have a degree…

…I’m now very frustrated. Could anyone please advise me on which agencies or banks provide good business services and advice? Or if there are any schemes which may be able to help me?

I’m 26 and very irritated by the Prince’s Trust at the moment.

How can I find the perfect business idea?

with one comment

I feel really passionately about starting my own business, and after spending a number of years helping to change the fortunes of other companies (Often being largely responsible for generating millions of £’s worth of turnover in the process) I really believe I have the skills and drive to do it.

There’s one problem – I don’t know what to do.

I know the following:

- It should be prominently web based (that’s where my skills lie)
- It should be easily scalable
- It should be based around a ‘system’, not requiring high levels of skilled staff in the future
- It should have relatively low start-up costs, e.g. <£10k

But that’s all I know, and of course it leaves absolutely massive, fundamental gaps to fill in.

I’ve read lots of books on coming up with ideas, but typically they focus on how to create ideas to solve a particular problem.

I DON’T KNOW WHAT PROBLEM I AM TRYING TO SOLVE YET!

Err…any ideas?
